Case study

The WCHCD

A livery company site carries centuries of tradition and a working membership operation at the same time. The design has to honour the first without burying the second.

The brief.

The Worshipful Company of Hackney Carriage Drivers maintains the link between the ancient trade guilds of the City of London and the modern taxi trade. The site had to present the Company's purpose, fellowship, charity and education, while doing the practical work: attracting members, listing events, and keeping the Company's news and committees in order.

What we did.

  1. Led with the words that define it.

Fellowship, Charity, Education over the modern black cab: the whole institution in one frame: ancient guild, working trade.

  2. Made joining a visible path.

Enquire About Membership and Apply To Join sit at the top of every page, because a heritage body still has to grow.

  3. Organised the institution.

The Master, committees, events, news and gallery each in their place, the housekeeping that keeps a member body functioning online.

What shipped.

  • Heritage-led homepage
  • Membership enquiry and application routes
  • Events, news, gallery and committee sections
  • The cab guide and Company history

What it does now

The Company gets a site that respects what it is and works for what it does, tradition on the surface, a functioning membership operation underneath.
